If you frequently travel on highways or expressways in your private car, there’s some exciting news for you. The government has introduced a new system where you will not have to pay toll tax for traveling up to 20 kilometers. This facility, however, is only applicable to private vehicles, not for taxis or commercial vehicles.
What is GNSS Technology?
The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is a newly introduced technology that tracks your vehicle’s location. If your car is equipped with an active GNSS device, you can travel up to 20 kilometers on a highway or expressway without paying toll tax.
How Will the System Work?
The government has amended the National Highway Fee Rules, 2008, stating that if your vehicle travels up to 20 kilometers daily on a highway, no toll will be charged. If your vehicle exceeds this distance, toll will be applied only to the additional kilometers traveled. The toll calculation will be based on the exact distance your vehicle has covered.
GNSS and FASTag Integration
GNSS technology will work alongside FASTag. So, if you already use FASTag, you can also benefit from this new system. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, mentioned that with this new system, vehicles will have to stop less frequently at toll plazas, reducing traffic congestion.
Pilot Projects
The GNSS-based toll system is currently being tested on two routes:
- Bengaluru-Mysore Highway (NH-275) in Karnataka
- Panipat-Hisar Highway (NH-709) in Haryana
Benefits of the New System
- No toll tax for up to 20 kilometers: If you regularly travel up to 20 kilometers on a highway or expressway, you won’t be charged any toll.
- Toll for longer distances: For distances beyond 20 kilometers, toll will be applied based on the additional kilometers traveled.
- GNSS with FASTag: The new system will integrate with FASTag, reducing the need to stop at toll plazas, making journeys smoother.
This new GNSS system will make traveling on highways and expressways more affordable and convenient for private car owners. With GNSS, toll collection will become more transparent, ensuring hassle-free road travel.
