Good news for Delhi residents. The journey within the city is about to become more comfortable and convenient. The Delhi Government has already started operating electric buses from 18 depots and is working on electrifying 42 more depots to make them ready for operations. The Transport Department is set to introduce more electric buses very soon.
Current Bus Operations in Delhi
As of now, Delhi operates 1,970 electric buses from 18 depots. In addition, there are 5,713 CNG buses currently in service. The Transport Department aims to introduce new buses in a phased manner over the next five years, including 4,212 electric buses. The plan is to replace all CNG buses with electric ones, thereby enhancing the public transportation system under the state scheme.
Electrification of New Depots
The electrification of 42 new depots is underway. Out of these, 16 depots will be ready soon, and the remaining depots are expected to be operational for electric buses within the next three to four months.
Private Operation of Local Buses
According to Transport Department officials, private operations of local buses (mohalla buses) will begin by the end of August or the first week of September. These buses aim to provide better connectivity within colonies in Delhi. The construction of bus terminals for these local buses is in progress, utilizing advanced technology like IDIT and Artificial Intelligence.

- Rohini Sector-37: 129 buses
- Shastri Park-2: 71 buses
- Shastri Park: 50 buses
- Majlis Park: 100 buses
- Mayapuri: 100 buses
- Nehru Place: 70 buses
- Rohini Sector-1: 100 buses
- Rohini Sector-2: 100 buses
- Burari-1: 160 buses
- Sukhdev Vihar: 180 buses
- Kalkaji: 150 buses
- Naraina: 120 buses
Survey for Women’s Buses
A survey is being conducted to address the specific needs of women commuters. The local buses will soon start operations to improve connectivity within colonies. The Transport Department plans to implement these services by the end of August or the first week of September.
Phasing Out CNG Buses
By the end of 2025, all CNG buses will be phased out to provide Delhi with a better and more efficient transportation system.
Government Spending on Electrification
The Delhi Government has invested ₹1,500 crore in the electrification of 42 depots for electric buses. Modern technology is being used to set up charging stations that are capable of efficiently charging the buses.
