Government employees have been eagerly waiting for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission for a long time. The organizations representing them have also been constantly raising this demand. Now, the government has clarified its stand on the formation of the 8th Pay Commission.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said that no proposal for the formation of the 8th Pay Commission is under consideration. He said, “Two requests have been received in June 2024 for the formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission. The government has no such proposal under consideration at present.”

Usually, the central government constitutes a pay commission every 10 years to revise the salaries of government employees. The 7th Pay Commission was constituted in February 2014. Its recommendations were implemented from January 1, 2016. Accordingly, the 8th Pay Commission is to be implemented on January 1, 2026.

8th Pay Commission to Benefit 1 Crore Employees

The implementation of the 8th Pay Commission will benefit about 1 crore employees. This includes about 49 lakh employees and 68 lakh pensioners. The next pay commission will increase the fitment factor for employees. This will increase their salary. The fitment factor helps in calculating the salary and pay matrix of the employees.

A fitment factor of 2.57 times was introduced in the 7th Pay Commission. This resulted in an increase of about 14.29% in the minimum salary of government employees and their basic salary was increased to about Rs 18,000. Experts believe that the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission could be around 3.68 times. If such a fitment factor is applied, the salary of the employees will increase by about Rs 8,000.
