Heavy Rainfall Hits Delhi, Almost Like a Cloudburst. New Delhi Faces Torrential Downpour
New Delhi witnessed a severe downpour on the morning of June 28, which meteorologists say was close to a cloudburst. According to standards, 100 millimeters of rain within an hour qualifies as a cloudburst.
Delhi recorded 91 millimeters in an hour, making the rainfall nearly a cloudburst event. The Safdarjung Observatory logged 228.1 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, the highest in June in the past 88 years, causing widespread disruption in the capital.
Widespread Disruption in the Capital
The heavy rains led to waterlogging in multiple areas, road closures, and even interruptions in metro services. The VVIP area of Lutyens’ Delhi wasn’t spared either, with water accumulating in MPs’ residences. Several underpasses had to be closed, and fatalities were reported due to weather-related accidents.
Meteorology Department’s Take
In a press conference, Meteorological Department Chief Mrutyunjay Mahapatra stated that while the event couldn’t be officially termed a cloudburst, it was very close to one. He explained that 100 millimeters of rainfall within an hour over a 20-30 square kilometer area defines a cloudburst, and Delhi came close to that mark.
Complex Weather Systems at Play
The heavy rainfall was a result of multiple weather systems converging over Delhi-NCR. According to the Meteorological Department, the aggregation of monsoonal systems led to intense thunderstorms and downpours across various parts of Delhi.
Enhanced Forecasting with New Radars
Mahapatra also announced plans to make weather forecasting more accurate by installing three new radars in the Delhi-NCR region. Currently, radars are stationed at Palam, Ayanagar, and Mausam Bhavan. The new installations are expected to be completed in the next two to three years.
Political Reactions and Blame Game
Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva blamed the AAP government for the waterlogging issues. He accused the Public Works Department of inefficiency, stating that out of 696 pumps installed across Delhi, over 400 were non-functional during the heavy rains.
Viral Video of Luxury Car Stuck in Water
A video showing a luxury car worth nearly seven crores stuck in waterlogged streets has gone viral on social media. The incident has sparked various reactions and comments online.
Congress Demands Compensation
Delhi Congress President Devendra Yadav demanded a compensation of one crore for the families of those who lost their lives due to the heavy rains. He termed the deaths as not mere accidents but preventable incidents, highlighting that 11 people, including children, lost their lives.
