In a shocking incident this morning, a major train accident occurred near Rangapani station in Darjeeling, West Bengal. The stationary Kanchanjanga Express was hit from behind by a freight train. The collision was so intense that the last three coaches of the Kanchanjanga Express were severely damaged.

Reports indicate that five people have lost their lives, and around 30 passengers have been injured. Rescue teams have promptly arrived at the scene, and the rescue operations are ongoing.

Chief Minister’s Reaction

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her shock over the incident on social media platform X. She stated, “Received tragic news of a rail accident from Phansidewa in Darjeeling district. Awaiting full details, but reports suggest Kanchanjanga Express collided with a freight train. Rescue and medical teams have been sent to the site. DM and SP are also on the ground. Rescue operations are ongoing at a war footing.”

Train Coaches Suspended in Air

The collision left three coaches of the Kanchanjanga Express extensively damaged. One coach ended up suspended in the air, while another overturned on the tracks. Officials noted that these three coaches suffered the most damage. The scene was chaotic, with injured passengers crying out in pain. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to extract and transport the injured to hospitals.

Investigation to Follow

The Kanchanjanga Express was en route to Sealdah after departing from New Jalpaiguri station when the freight train rear-ended it around 8:45 AM. Railway officials have announced an investigation into the incident. The driver of the freight train will also be questioned to determine if a technical issue caused the accident. Initial findings suggest a signaling problem might have led the freight train onto the same track.
