The proposed metro line connecting Noida International Airport and Ghaziabad will not be hindered by electricity shortages. In a progressive move towards sustainability, both the metro and the Namo Bharat train will be partially powered by solar energy.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) emphasizes the extensive utilization of renewable energy sources. This initiative aims to achieve dual benefits: reducing electricity costs and contributing to environmental protection.

To ensure uninterrupted 24-hour power supply, five-megawatt solar power plants will be established at various sites, including Namo Bharat stations. These plants are anticipated to meet approximately 50% of the project’s energy requirements.

A 25-Year Agreement for Solar Energy Procurement

The Namo Bharat stations and their surroundings will witness the development of solar power plants under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model.

The developer will install solar panels on rooftops and sites owned by NCRTC. A 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) will be established with NCRTC for the supply of solar energy, effective from the project’s commencement.

Solar Energy Integration along the Ghaziabad-Airport Corridor

NCRTC has outlined plans to install solar systems at various stations, including Ecotech-6, Knowledge Park 5 in Greater Noida, and Pratap Vihar in Ghaziabad, to harness solar energy for the 72.2-kilometer-long corridor stretching from Ghaziabad to the airport.

Environmental Benefits and Cost Savings

The integration of solar energy into the metro and Namo Bharat train operations aligns with NCRTC’s commitment to sustainable transportation practices. This initiative is expected to reduce the project’s reliance on conventional electricity sources, thereby minimizing carbon emissions and contributing to a cleaner environment.

Moreover, the adoption of solar energy is anticipated to generate significant cost savings over the project’s lifespan. By reducing its dependence on grid electricity, NCRTC can optimize its operational expenses and ensure the long-term financial viability of the metro and Namo Bharat train services.
