Delhi, India’s capital city, is taking a significant step to combat air pollution. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is preparing to quadruple parking fees in its area during periods of very poor air quality.
Proposed Amendment to Parking Fees
The corporation is set to discuss and potentially approve this proposal in a meeting scheduled for January 29. Once approved, whenever the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP)’s second phase is implemented, parking charges in the area will increase fourfold. This rule aims to encourage public transportation use and reduce private vehicle usage.
Understanding GRAP’s Phases
The Central Pollution Control Board, under MCD’s proposal, has divided GRAP into four phases, based on air quality levels. The second phase of GRAP triggers when air quality reaches a very poor state, prompting increased parking fees.
MCD’s Parking Fee Structure
Currently, the parking charges for four-wheelers are ₹20 per hour for up to four hours, and ₹100 for 24 hours. For two-wheelers, it’s ₹10 per hour for up to four hours and ₹50 for 24 hours. With the new rule, these charges could be quadrupled during GRAP’s second phase.
Impact and Context
The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) had already doubled parking fees in December following the implementation of GRAP phase two. These increased charges will apply until January 31. It’s noteworthy that Delhi Municipal Corporation operates approximately 425 ground and multilevel parking facilities
