The Delhi Municipal Corporation has intensified its efforts against illegal constructions across various regions in Delhi. This move comes amidst increasing complaints about unauthorized structures in the city.

Key Highlights

  • Targeted Areas: The crackdown has been extensive, covering areas such as Mayapuri Phase 1, Ghazipur Dairy Farm, Zakir Nagar, Vishwakarma Colony, Abul Fazal Enclave, Madanpur Khadar, and several other localities.
  • Demolition and Sealing: Illegal structures in these areas have been demolished, and over 30 properties have been sealed.
  • Plan of Action: The corporation plans to remove over 700 illegal constructions in the next three weeks. So far, 243 such structures have been dealt with, including those on private agricultural land.

Challenges and Public Response

  • Audit Policy: Affected residents criticize the lack of a clear audit policy for illegal constructions in Delhi. They point out that many have invested in plots sold by builders without realizing the illegality.
  • Long-Term Issue: Illegal constructions have been a problem for over 20 years, yet comprehensive audits and investigations have been lacking.

Recent Operations

  • Collaborative Effort: The corporation’s teams, in collaboration with Delhi Police, have recently demolished illegal constructions at over 40 sites. This includes the removal of unauthorized structures on approximately 5400 yards of private agricultural land in Burari, along with the demolition of walls and roads on several plots.
  • Additional Areas Targeted: Actions were also taken in Kadipur Ward’s Swaroop Nagar and Malkaganj Ward’s Sabzi Mandi area, along with Laxmi Nagar’s Guru Ramdas locality.

The Delhi Municipal Corporation’s crackdown is a significant step towards addressing the long-standing issue of illegal constructions. While the actions have garnered mixed reactions from the public, the need for a systematic and fair approach to dealing with such constructions is evident.

Future strategies should include comprehensive audits and more transparent policies to prevent illegal constructions and protect the interests of legitimate homeowners and investors
