The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is on track to launch the new metro corridor between Janakpuri West and Krishna Park Extension by July next year. This stretch is part of the under-construction Janakpuri West-R.K. Ashram corridor, which extends for approximately 2.5 kilometers. DMRC’s Managing Director, Vikas Kumar, has confirmed the developments, marking a significant expansion of the capital’s metro network.
Construction Amidst Challenges
Phase 4 of the Delhi Metro sees the construction of three new corridors. These include the 28.92-kilometer Janakpuri West-R.K. Ashram corridor, the 12.55-kilometer Majlis Park-Maujpur corridor, and the 23.65-kilometer Tughlakabad-Aerocity corridor.
Initiated in December 2019, the projects were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to delays. Additional setbacks such as delays in tree felling permissions and land acquisition issues have pushed the completion date to March 2026.
Operational Readiness and Extensions
Despite the delays, the tunnel work for the underground section between Janakpuri West and Krishna Park Extension is complete, with track-laying in progress.
This corridor will integrate with the existing Pink Line, facilitating a direct connection from Botanical Garden to Krishna Park Extension. Following this, the Maujpur-Majlis Park section, set to be Delhi’s first double-decker corridor, will commence operations in March 2025.
Pending Projects and Approvals
Three corridors remain pending in Phase 4, including the Indralok-Indraprasth, Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block, and Rithala-Narela corridors. The projects for Indralok-Indraprasth and Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block are awaiting central government approval. There is also a proposal to extend the Rithala-Narela corridor to Kundli in Haryana, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to be submitted to the government shortly.
