New Delhi’s air quality reached the ‘very poor’ category on Sunday, with the air quality index crossing 300 in Delhi, Faridabad, Noida/Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram. This resulted in increased suffocation in the air. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the average air quality index in Delhi was 313 on Sunday, a significant increase of 65 points within 24 hours. Such levels of air quality are considered to be very poor.
The polluted air has caused various health issues for the residents, including burning sensation in the eyes, sore nose, and throat. The level of pollutant PM 10 was recorded at 268 micrograms per cubic meter, while the level of PM 2.5 was 137 micrograms per cubic meter at 4 pm on Sunday.
It is worth noting that Delhi experienced relatively clean air during the summer and monsoon season, with only one day in May having extremely poor air quality. However, with the drop in temperature, pollutant particles tend to remain in the air for a longer duration, leading to an increase in pollution levels. This is the first time since May that the air quality index has crossed 300.
Unfortunately, there is no immediate relief in sight for the people of Delhi as the weather factors are expected to remain almost the same for the next two days. Consequently, the pollution level is likely to stay in the very poor category.
In anticipation of the worsening air quality, the second phase of restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) was implemented on Saturday. These restrictions are imposed when the air quality index crosses 300, aiming to prevent further deterioration of air quality.
