India likely to resume issuance of visas to Canadians if safety concerns addressed: S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced on Sunday that India is willing to resume the issuance of visas to Canadians if it sees progress in the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada. He further stated that India invoked the provision of parity in Canada’s diplomatic presence in the country due to concerns over interference in New Delhi’s affairs by Canadian personnel.

Addressing safety concerns

During an event, S Jaishankar responded to a question on diplomatic ties and stated, “If we see progress in the safety of our diplomats in Canada, we would like to resume issuance of visas there.” He emphasized that parity is provided for by the relevant international rule, the Vienna Convention. India invoked parity as it had concerns about continuous interference in its affairs by Canadian personnel.

Canadian diplomats asked to leave

The announcement by S Jaishankar came after Canada withdrew 41 of its diplomats from India amidst the escalating situation between both countries. Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly informed that they have removed 41 diplomats and their 42 family members from India over the ongoing row.

Joly expressed concern over the removal of diplomatic immunities for all but 21 Canadian diplomats and dependents in Delhi. She stated that this arbitrary action put their personal safety at risk.

Violation of Vienna Convention

Canada had accused India of violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The strained relationship between India and Canada is currently going through a difficult phase. S Jaishankar mentioned that India has problems with a certain segment of Canadian politics.
