Rajasthan Congress: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot proposes sitting-gating formula for ticket distribution

In a meeting of the Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Congress party held in Delhi on Wednesday, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot proposed a sitting-gating formula for the distribution of tickets in Rajasthan. While some names have almost been finalized, discussions are still ongoing regarding others.

Sitting-gating formula

Contrary to previous claims that the party would cancel tickets for a large number of sitting ministers and MLAs in Rajasthan, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has suggested a sitting-gating formula. This means that most of the sitting MLAs will be given tickets again, instead of denying them. Gehlot’s proposal has received support from Dotasara and Randhawa.

The sitting-gating formula would likely benefit the MLAs from Sachin Pilot’s camp as well, reducing the chances of any major protests from the pilots. However, in the 80 seats where there are no Congress or Congress-backed independent MLAs, more than 50 percent of tickets may be changed.

Progress in candidate selection

In the screening committee meeting held on Tuesday night, a single candidate has almost been finalized for about 60 names. Discussions are currently underway regarding the remaining 140 seats. If the party decides to field candidates on non-disputed seats in the first list, those seats will have a fixed candidate.

Central Election Committee meeting

The Central Election Committee meeting for Rajasthan includes Congress Party National President Mallikarjun Kharge, former President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, State President Govind Dotasara, in-charge Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Gaurav Gogoi, KC Venugopal, Ajay Maken, Salman Khurshid, Amrita Dhawan, Qazi Nizamuddin, and KL Punia.

Summary:

  • Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot suggests a sitting-gating formula for ticket distribution in Rajasthan.
  • Most sitting MLAs may be given tickets again, reducing the chances of protests.
  • Discussions ongoing for the remaining 140 seats.
  • A single candidate has almost been finalized for about 60 names.
  • Central Election Committee meeting includes top Congress leaders.
