New Delhi: Counting of Votes Underway for DUSU Elections
Counting of votes for the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections has been ongoing since Saturday morning. The results for all four posts of Central Panel Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Joint Secretary are expected to be declared soon. This year, there are 24 candidates in the fray.
The voter turnout this year has witnessed a 2 percent increase compared to the previous elections. Around 42 percent of students exercised their franchise. Security has been tightened in the North Campus area of Delhi University ahead of the vote counting. Both ABVP and NSUI student unions have claimed victory.
Various political parties, including the BJP and Congress, have put in their full strength for the DUSU elections. Several party leaders have also campaigned for their respective candidates. The competition primarily remains between ABVP and NSUI, as seen in previous elections. While the complete results are yet to be revealed, ABVP has won in 9 colleges, and NSUI has won in 6 colleges.
The DUSU elections were last held in 2019. Elections could not take place in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2022, the elections were postponed to ensure a smooth academic calendar. Students arrived at colleges in groups or individually to cast their votes. The streets were filled with campaign posters and hoardings. A total of 24 candidates are contesting for the posts of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary. The President’s post has the highest number of candidates, with eight contenders.
