Delhi Municipal Corporation to separate management of two hospitals for improved healthcare services

The Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) has decided to separate the management of Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Disease (MVID) Hospital and the Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis (RBIPMT) due to difficulties in delivering healthcare services effectively. The decision was approved by Mayor Shelly Oberoi on September 12.

Difficulties faced by the merged hospitals

The RBIPMT and MVID hospitals were merged in 2017, but have been facing challenges in providing healthcare services efficiently. The hospital administration has struggled to manage both facilities effectively, leading to the decision to demerge them.

Focus on improved healthcare services

The separation of management aims to provide more focused and efficient healthcare services to the people of Delhi. The Mayor stated that both RBIPMT and MVID hospitals will thrive independently and continue to serve as beacons of healthcare excellence in the city.

Enhancing TB research and diagnostic capabilities

The demerger intends to enhance tuberculosis (TB) research initiatives at the institution. After the separation, the Rajan Babu Hospital will have 846 employees, while the MVID hospital will have 215 employees. Additionally, 27 new positions will be created to improve healthcare delivery. The officials also plan to establish an advanced laboratory to enhance diagnostic capabilities.

Continued cooperation and focus on MVIDH

Both hospitals will continue to cooperate with each other and have their own laboratories. The separation of management will allow for more focus on the development of the Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Diseases Hospital (MVIDH), which is the only infectious disease hospital in Delhi.

About the hospitals

The Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis (RBIPMT) and the Maharishi Valmiki Infectious Diseases Hospital (MVIDH) are located adjacent to each other in the Kingsway Camp area and are among the oldest healthcare institutions in the city. RBIPMT was established in 1935 as a TB hospital, while MVID Hospital is Delhi’s only hospital dedicated to infectious diseases.
