New Delhi, The Supreme Court has instructed Delhi Police to refrain from issuing temporary licenses for the sale of firecrackers. This directive came during a hearing on Thursday regarding a petition seeking a ban on firecrackers to combat pollution in various areas, including Delhi-NCR. The court has reserved its decision on the matter.
Justices A.S. Bopanna and MM Sundaresh expressed the need to assess the work done in previous years and determine if any additional instructions are required. They acknowledged that the court has addressed most aspects through various orders over time.
The Supreme Court bench informed Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Central Government, that a government-imposed ban should constitute a complete prohibition. They emphasized that Delhi Police must not issue any temporary licenses for firecracker sales, as doing so would violate their orders.
It was highlighted that following the Supreme Court’s 2018 order, only green crackers are permitted to be burnt in the Delhi-NCR region. Considerable progress has been made in implementing this restriction.
