National Testing Agency to Conduct Common Entrance Test for PhD Admissions

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that it will be conducting a common entrance test for admission to PhD courses offered by the University of Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU). This move comes as a significant change from the previous practice of separate exams conducted by NTA for JNU and DUET for Delhi University. Additionally, BBAU used to hold entrance tests at the institute level, while BHU had the Research Entrance Test (RET) for integrated MPhil-PhD courses.

The online registration for the PhD entrance test is currently underway at phd-entrance.samarth.ac.in. The last date to apply for the exam is September 8. The medium of question papers will be English, except for Language papers. The date and time of the test will be announced later.

There is no age limit for appearing in this PhD entrance exam. However, candidates may need to fulfill the age criteria of the university where they wish to take admission. The minimum educational qualification required to appear in the test is a postgraduate or equivalent degree. Candidates who are currently appearing in the qualifying exam are also eligible to apply.

The test will be conducted in computer-based mode, with two sections in the question paper. Section 1 will cover research methodology, while section 2 will focus on the subject-specific content. Each paper will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), and the duration of the test will be 3 hours or 180 minutes.

Candidates can choose a maximum of three courses, provided the timings of the two papers do not overlap. The list of subjects for which the test will be held is available in the information bulletin provided on the official website.
