Initially, on August 3, MCD had issued a circular to pick up stray dogs from 47 locations and keep them at animal birth control (ABC) centres for six weeks. However, this decision received severe criticism from animal activists who called it irrational and impossible to implement without adverse consequences. They claimed that the MCD does not have enough facilities to keep the strays for such a long period.
In response to the criticism, on August 4, the department issued another circular reducing the time period for keeping the stray dogs at ABC centres to one week. The new circular also stated that a massive drive will be carried out for picking up stray dogs with the help of NGOs and private veterinary doctors from September 4-7. All stray dogs picked up from these locations shall be kept at ABC centres and will be released in the same area from where they were picked up after the G20 summit is over.
However, on August 5, MCD completely withdrew the order. An official stated that the sterilisation and immunisation programme of stray dogs will continue as per the ABC rules 2023.
Animal activists alleged that the entire plan was flawed and the civic body should have consulted them before announcing it. They believe that the MCD should focus on long-term solutions such as sterilisation and vaccination programs rather than temporary measures like picking up stray dogs for a specific event.
This decision by MCD to withdraw the order is a positive move as it takes into account the concerns raised by animal activists. It is important to prioritize the well-being of stray dogs and ensure that any decisions regarding their treatment are made after consultation with experts in the field.
