NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stones for the redevelopment of approximately 500 railway stations in a single day next week. The redevelopment will be carried out under the ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’ and will require an investment of nearly Rs 20,000 crore. Some of the stations for which the PM will lay the foundation stone include Prayagraj, Vijaynagaram, Delhi Cantonment, Narela (Delhi), and Aurangabad.
Simultaneous Events at All Locations
Officials have stated that considering the scale and spread of the projects across the country, the railway ministry will hold simultaneous events at all 500 locations. The ministry also plans to organize different competitions among school students, with an estimated participation of over two lakh students on that day.
Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to improve the amenities at the stations by preparing master plans and implementing them in phases. The improvements include better station access, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lift and escalators, cleanliness, free wifi, and kiosks for local products under the ‘One Station One Product’ scheme. The redevelopment program also focuses on improving the station building, integrating the station with both sides of the city, multimodal integration, and environment-friendly solutions.
Identification of Railway Stations
So far, 1,309 railway stations have been identified under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. These stations include 83 in Rajasthan, 87 in Gujarat, 80 in Madhya Pradesh, and 34 in Haryana.
