Haryana Communal Violence: Section 144 imposed in Gurugram, Faridabad, Nuh; internet services suspended

On Monday afternoon, violent confrontations took place at Nuh Chowk in New Delhi when around 80 vehicles and motorcycles, carrying participants of the Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, were stopped from proceeding towards a Shiv temple in Nalhar. Here’s a timeline of what happened:

  • 10am: Thousands of people gather for the Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, which starts from Nalhar in Nuh. The march is supposed to visit temples across the district and conclude by evening.
  • 12pm: Some individuals from the group allegedly raise slogans, leading to stone-pelting. The incident reportedly begins at Khedla Mod in Nuh.
  • 4pm: Clashes spread throughout Nuh. Vehicles, police stations, shops, and petrol pumps are set on fire. Some individuals carrying weapons fire in the air.
  • 5.30pm: The Haryana government suspends mobile internet and SMS services until August 2 in Nuh, citing “intense communal tension” and a threat to life and property.
  • 6pm: Violence also erupts in neighboring areas of Nuh, including Sohna in Gurgaon, Hodal in Palwal, and Ballabgarh in Faridabad. A group attempts to block the Rajiv Chowk intersection on NH-8, but the police manage to disperse the crowd.
  • 8.30pm: The Gurgaon deputy commissioner issues a warning against any online posts that could spread rumors and incite violence.

As a result of the violence, section 144 of the CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) has been imposed in Gurugram, Faridabad, and Nuh. This prohibits the gathering of more than four people in public places and gives the police the authority to take necessary action to maintain peace and order. Additionally, mobile internet and SMS services have been suspended in Nuh to prevent the spread of rumors and misinformation.

Authorities are taking steps to control the situation and ensure the safety of the public. The incident has raised concerns about communal tensions in the region, and efforts are being made to restore calm and prevent further escalation of violence.
