New Delhi:
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has written to Chief Justices of High Courts, expressing his concern about an incident where a judge called for an explanation regarding inconveniences faced during a train journey. The incident has caused disquiet within and outside the judiciary, and Justice Chandrachud emphasized the importance of self-reflection and counseling within the judiciary.
The judge in question had requested an explanation from the regional railway manager after facing difficulties obtaining refreshments and receiving no response from the TTE or railway police. The Registrar of the court forwarded the request, stating that the incident had caused great inconvenience and displeasure to the judge.
In his communication, Justice Chandrachud highlighted that a High Court does not possess disciplinary jurisdiction over railway personnel.
He emphasized that the protocol facilities provided to judges should not be used to assert privilege or power, but rather should be seen as a means to exercise wise judicial authority.
Justice Chandrachud requested the Chief Justices to share his concerns and cautioned against the misuse of protocol facilities that may cause inconvenience to others or result in public criticism of the judiciary.
Aside from his courtroom judgments, Chief Justice Chandrachud has made headlines for his unconventional actions, such as visiting the Supreme Court cafeteria, advocating for the recognition of back office judiciary work, and proposing to rename certain positions in the Supreme Court, including that of sanitation workers.
