Delhi CM Kejriwal under fire as flood control committee remains inactive for two years
Officials from the Lieutenant Governor’s (LG) House have raised concerns over the inactivity of the apex flood control committee, headed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, for the past two years. The committee, responsible for monitoring flood control measures in the capital, has not convened a meeting since 2021. In response, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government stated that they have been regularly reviewing flood and water logging issues with relevant ministers.
Kejriwal visits relief camp as part of rehabilitation efforts
In an effort to strengthen relief and rehabilitation efforts for the approximately 25,000 people affected by the floods, Chief Minister Kejriwal visited a flood relief camp in north Delhi. Accompanied by Revenue Minister Atishi, Kejriwal inspected the Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya camp in Mori Gate. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena also visited flood-affected areas in Raj Ghat.
Apex committee’s crucial role in flood control
The apex flood control committee, chaired by the Delhi CM, consists of various government officials and stakeholders, including ministers, MPs, MLAs, and representatives from the army and Central Water Commission. Its responsibilities include monitoring danger levels, coordinating between different agencies, and passing a flood control order before the monsoon season. However, the committee has failed to meet in the last two years, raising concerns about the lack of preparedness.
Delhi government defends flood control efforts
In response to the criticism, the Delhi government stated that they have been actively reviewing flood and water logging issues since May. Minister Bhardwaj and Minister Atishi have been conducting interdepartmental meetings to ensure preparedness. The government also defended the issuance of the Flood Control Order, stating that it was done in compliance with the necessary procedures and based on historical data.
Delhi ministers accused of blaming others for floods
While the AAP-led Delhi government has been blaming various factors for the floods, including the rise in water levels and backflow of drains, officials from the LG House argue that the government should take responsibility for the situation. They claim that the Flood Control Order was issued without proper consultation and that the government failed to convene the necessary meetings.
