All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has criticized Kerala governor Arif Mohammed Khan for his remarks on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Khan had stated that concerns raised about the UCC should be welcomed, as they would be taken into consideration by the government. In response, Owaisi said that as a Governor, Khan should not be praising the government and should instead resign from his position and officially join the BJP.
Owaisi further criticized the Centre’s proposal to implement the UCC, alleging that it is being used as a distraction from important issues such as poverty, unemployment, price rise, and Chinese intrusion. He emphasized that the UCC is often brought up by the BJP before general elections to polarize the electorate and gain political advantage.
Owaisi revealed that his party has submitted its response, along with the legal opinion of ex-Supreme Court judge Gopala Gowda, to the Law Commission. The Law Commission had requested suggestions on the UCC. Owaisi highlighted the repeated timing of the UCC discussion, which often occurs just before general elections. He claimed that the BJP raises this issue to create a divisive atmosphere for political gains in the upcoming 2024 elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently made a strong case for the Uniform Civil Code while addressing party workers in Bhopal. He stated that Muslims were being misled in the name of the UCC and questioned the feasibility of running a country with different laws for different members of a household.
