New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is poised to emerge victorious in the violence-marred panchayat elections in West Bengal, according to data released by the State Election Commission (SEC). Out of the 27,985 gram panchayat seats declared, the TMC has won in 18,606 seats and is leading in 8,180 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the TMC’s closest rival, has won 4,482 seats and is leading in 2,419 seats. The elections are being held for a total of 63,229 gram panchayat seats, 9,728 Panchayat Samiti seats, and 928 Zila Parishad seats.
The panchayat elections, held on July 8, were marred by widespread violence, resulting in the death of approximately 20 people on that day alone. A total of 40 people lost their lives in the month leading up to the elections. The main opposition parties, including the BJP, Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Congress, have accused the TMC of orchestrating the violence.
The voter turnout for the 696 booths where repolls were held on Monday was over 70%. The SEC is preparing for the counting of votes on Tuesday, with expectations that the process may spill over into Wednesday. The counting is taking place at 339 venues spread across 22 districts, and it is being closely guarded by state police personnel and central forces.
Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee expressed gratitude to rural Bengal for supporting the party and claimed that the opposition’s campaign of “no vote to Mamata” has now turned into “Now vote for Mamata,” paving the way for the party’s success in next year’s Lok Sabha polls.
The TMC has emerged as the clear winner in gram panchayat seats, with 18,606 seats won and 8,180 seats being led. The BJP has won 4,482 seats and is leading in 2,419 seats. The Left Front has won 1,502 seats, while the CPI(M) alone has won 1,424 seats. The Congress has won 1,073 seats, and other parties and independents have won 476 and 1,060 seats, respectively.
For Panchayat Samiti seats, the TMC has won 118 seats and is leading in 782 seats. The BJP is leading in 79 seats, while the CPI(M) has won one seat and is leading in 27 seats. The Congress is leading in 8 seats. The TMC has won all 18 Zila Parishad seats declared so far and is leading in 64 seats, while the CPI(M) has won two seats.
The violence during the elections led to the death of at least 15 people, with 11 of them belonging to the TMC. The SEC ordered repolling in 696 seats on Monday due to allegations of vote tampering and violence. The repolling took place peacefully.
As the TMC celebrates its victory, a war of words has erupted between the TMC and the BJP. The BJP has accused the ruling party of blocking opposition agents from entering counting centers in an attempt to steal the elections. The TMC has dismissed these allegations as baseless.
The counting of votes is expected to continue for the next two days, and the results will be compiled gradually. The SEC has imposed prohibitory orders outside counting venues to prevent any untoward incidents.
