Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Two Chief Justices for Elevation to Top Court

– Telangana High Court Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Kerala High Court Chief Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti have been recommended for elevation to the Supreme Court.
– The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, discussed the names of Chief Justices and senior judges of High Courts for appointment to the apex court.
– The Collegium considered factors such as seniority, merit, performance, integrity, and the need for diversity and inclusion in the Supreme Court.
– Justices Bhuyan and Bhatti were found to be deserving and suitable in all respects for appointment as judges of the Supreme Court.
– Justice Bhuyan has been the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court since June 2022 and has a good reputation for integrity and competence.
– Justice Bhatti has been the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court since June 2023 and his appointment will provide representation to the State of Andhra Pradesh.
– The Collegium also recommended names for Chief Justices of seven High Courts, including Gujarat HC Acting CJ Ashish J Desai and Karnataka HC Justice Alok Aradhe.
– Other recommended Chief Justices include Justice Subhasis Talapatra for Orissa HC, Justice Siddharth Mridul for Manipur HC, Justice Sunita Agarwal for Gujarat HC, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay for Allahabad HC, and Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur for Andhra Pradesh HC.
– The Supreme Court currently has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges and is functioning with 31 judges.
