Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Two Chief Justices for Appointment as Judges
- The Supreme Court collegium, headed by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, has recommended the appointment of Telangana High Court Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Kerala High Court Chief Justice S Venkatanarayana Bhatti as judges in the apex court.
- The collegium, which comprises Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, and Surya Kant, made the decision in a meeting and uploaded the resolution on the top court’s website.
- The Supreme Court currently has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges but is functioning with only 31 after the retirement of three judges last month.
- Justice Bhuyan is known for his specialization and domain knowledge in the law of taxation. He has also served as a judge of the Bombay High Court, dealing with a wide spectrum of cases, including taxation.
- Justice Bhuyan is currently the senior-most judge of the Telangana High Court and has been serving as its Chief Justice since June 28, 2022.
- Justice Bhatti has considerable experience in various branches of law during his long tenure as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court and as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court.
- The parent High Court of Justice Bhatti, the Andhra Pradesh High Court, has not had any representation on the Supreme Court bench since August 2022.
- Justice Bhatti was appointed as a Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on April 12, 2013, and is currently serving as Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court since June 1, 2023.
