Delhi Power Consumers to Pay More as PPAC Surcharge Hiked by 8%

Power consumers in Delhi using over 200 units of electricity per month will have to shell out more money as the power purchase adjustment cost (PPAC) surcharge has been hiked by 8%. Power Minister Atishi blamed the central government for the price hike and alleged that electricity was getting costlier in Delhi due to the Centre’s mismanagement. However, she clarified that the hike would not affect consumers whose electricity consumption is 200 units or below. The PPAC is revised every three months and is dependent on the prevailing prices of fuel such as coal and gas used in power generation.

Harish Khurana, BJP’s Delhi unit spokesperson, blamed the AAP government and the discoms’ nexus for the hike, claiming that the PPAC was hiked from 16% to 22% last year and again this year. The Delhi government provides free electricity to those consuming up to 200 units per month, while those consuming between 201-400 units receive a 50% subsidy.

The Delhi Power Minister stated that the Centre’s mismanagement forced the use of imported coal, which costs 10 times more than domestic coal. The domestic coal is priced at around INR 200 per tonne, while the imported variety costs INR 25,000 per tonne. Atishi alleged that the Centre had forced coal buyers to purchase at least 10% of the imported variety. She demanded to know from the Centre if there was a nexus with coal importers, which was why buyers were being forced to purchase coal at exorbitant prices.
