Indian auto industry witnesses a surge in demand for SUVs, replacing sedans

The Indian auto industry has undergone a transformation in the past decade, with changing preferences and needs of the consumers. Sedans, which were once considered premium and luxurious, are now losing their demand to Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs). SUVs have taken over the sedan category in the Indian market due to their affordability, sporty looks, low maintenance, and better mileage.

According to recent sales figures, Maruti Baleno emerged as the best-selling car in May, but only one sedan, Maruti Dzire, made it to the top 25 list. The list comprises eight hatchbacks, 11 SUVs, four MPVs, and one van, leaving only one sedan.

Compact and mid-size SUVs are the most in-demand categories in the Indian market, where several body types, including micro, mini, compact, mid-size, full-size, and crossovers, are being sold. Tata Tigor, Hyundai Aura, and Honda Amaze are the popular compact sedans in the market, with the Maruti Dzire being the only sedan on the top 25 list.

The trend has been such that even some small cars are being marketed as SUVs, which raises the question of whether all cars sold under the SUV category meet the standards. The Indian government had recently clarified the definition of SUVs, setting certain criteria for a car to be classified as an SUV, such as an engine capacity of over 1,500cc, a length of more than 4,000mm, and a ground clearance of 170mm or more.
