IRCTC Offers Rs 10 Lakh Insurance for 35 Paise to Passengers Booking Tickets through Online Portal
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) offers an optional travel insurance policy to passengers purchasing tickets through its online portal. This policy provides cover in case of injury or loss of passenger during train journey. The policy has gained attention after the train accident in Odisha in which about 288 people passed away and more than 1000 people were injured.
What is Covered under the Policy
The policy offers 5 types of coverage which are common for all classes. The first type of coverage is provided if the passenger traveling in this gets accidental bodily injury during the journey. If he passes away within 12 months of the incident, then 100% of the sum insured will be provided to the claimants. As per the policy, an amount of Rs 10 lakh will be provided in case of passing away. The second type of coverage is provided if an injury sustained during the journey turns into permanent total disability after a gap of 12 months, then the insured passenger would be entitled to receive an amount of Rs.10 lakhs. The third type of coverage is provided if the injury directly and independently turns into permanent partial disability within 12 months of the incident, then the insured person stands to get Rs.7 lakh 50 thousand. The policy covers medical expenses up to Rs.2 lakhs during the treatment of injury sustained during the journey within the period of insurance. Coverage up to Rs 10,000 will be given for the transportation of the dead body.
How to Claim the Policy
If the insured passenger or the legal heir of the insured passenger wants to claim the benefits under the policy, then he/she should submit the claim details to the nearest office of the insurance company within 4 months from the date of incident.
Passengers booking tickets through the IRCTC online portal have the option to select the insurance policy, for which passengers have to pay Rs 0.35 per person for insurance. It is to be noted that selecting this is optional and one cannot select this option after reservation. This should be selected while booking the ticket on the IRCTC portal.
In conclusion, the IRCTC insurance policy offers a sense of security to the passengers traveling by train. It is a small price to pay for the peace of mind it provides.
