Indian Railways May Reintroduce Concession for Senior Citizens

The Parliamentary Standing Committee has recommended the reintroduction of the concession on fares given to senior citizens by the Railways before the coronavirus pandemic. This concession was withdrawn on March 20, 2020, due to the pandemic.

Concession Details

Indian Railways used to offer a 40 percent concession in fares to men aged 60 years or more, while women passengers of the age of 58 years or more got a 50 percent discount in the fare. These concessions were given to senior citizens in fares of all classes of Mail/Express/Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Duronto group trains.

Committee’s Recommendation

The Standing Committee on Railways, headed by BJP MP Radha Mohan Singh, made this recommendation in its report on the demand for grants presented in both houses of Parliament on Monday. The committee said that according to the information given by the Railways, the situation has become normal from Covid, and the Railways has achieved normal growth.

Railways’ Response

However, the Railways said that it has no plans at present to resume the concession, as already 50-55 percent concession is being given to all the passengers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav also made it clear in December last year that the concession given to senior citizens in the Railways will not be restored for the time being due to the high pension and salary bill of the Railways.

Conclusion

Although the Railway Ministry has not confirmed any plans to reintroduce the concession, the recommendation by the Parliamentary Standing Committee will put pressure on the Railways to reconsider the decision and offer the concession to senior citizens again.
