The Supreme Court has sent a notice to the LG Secretariat seeking a reply on a petition challenging the appointment of an alderman by the Lt Governor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) received from the Delhi government. Delhi government’s lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that this is an insult to democracy. One party wins with a majority and efforts are being made to reverse it.

The Supreme Court has given notice to the Lieutenant Governor’s office and asked to reply by Monday. Now this issue will be heard on 17 April. Describing the nomination of councilors by the Lieutenant Governor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) as arbitrary and unconstitutional, the Delhi government argued that it is its right to nominate councillors.

On this matter, the LG office said that after the change in GNCTD Act in 2019, the legal situation has changed. Therefore, the argument of the elected government of Delhi has now become redundant. During the hearing, a bench of CJI Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala asked how can the Lieutenant Governor take any decision without consulting the cabinet?
