The Delhi Government is introducing a new initiative to encourage vehicle owners to scrap their old vehicles. Under this proposed scrap policy, individuals who scrap their old vehicles will be eligible for a subsidy of INR 50,000 when purchasing a new vehicle.

Key Aspects of the Scrap Policy
- The Transport Department has proposed this policy, which is currently awaiting financial approval.
- In the fiscal year 2021-22, a total of 48.77 lakh vehicles were de-registered due to the completion of their tenure. Among these, only 83,240 vehicle owners obtained the No Objection Certificate (NOC).
- For the financial year 2022-23, about 6.18 lakh vehicles were de-registered, and 5.39 lakh vehicle owners received the NOC.
- Over the past three financial years, more than 55 lakh vehicles have been de-registered, with around six lakh obtaining NOCs and 1.5 lakh vehicles scrapped.
Process of Availing the Subsidy
- Vehicle owners will not receive the subsidy immediately upon scrapping their vehicle.
- After scrapping the vehicle, the owner will be issued a certificate.
- This certificate must be presented when purchasing a new vehicle to avail of the INR 50,000 subsidy.
- The government’s intention is to phase out vehicles over 15 years old, though a fee may be imposed for retaining such vehicles.
