Pakistan Interior Minister Blames India’s RAW for Balochistan Blast
Pakistan Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti has accused India’s Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) intelligence agency of being behind a suicide blast in Balochistan on Friday. The attack took place during a procession to celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday, killing 60 people and injuring 60 others. The Indian government has not yet responded to Bugti’s allegation.
Background
- The attack occurred near the Madina Masjid at a place called Mastung in Balochistan province.
- Officials in Pakistan have long claimed that India supports violent groups in the country, a claim that India has consistently denied.
- Pakistani Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti stated that all institutions in the country will join forces to combat the elements involved in the suicide bombing.
Wasim Baig, the spokesman for Balochistan’s health department, reported that the death toll has risen due to seven additional deaths in the hospital since the attack. Several patients remain in critical condition. Another attack on a mosque in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the same day claimed the lives of at least five people.
No group has claimed responsibility for either attack. The Pakistani Taliban (TTP), known for carrying out deadly attacks in the country, has denied involvement in Friday’s blasts. The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) has filed a report to initiate an investigation into the attacks.
The surge in terror attacks in western provinces of Pakistan has cast a shadow on preparations for the upcoming general elections in January. Previous attacks had predominantly targeted security forces.
The caretaker government of Balochistan has declared three days of mourning following the attack.
Recent Incidents in Balochistan
- Earlier this month, a blast injured 11 people, including Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Hafiz Hamdullah, in the same district.
- A week before that, an unidentified attacker killed a security official at a bus stand.
- In May of this year, unidentified attackers targeted a polio vaccination team on the outskirts of Mastung, resulting in the death of a policeman.
These incidents, along with the recent uptick in terror activities, have raised concerns in Pakistan.
As investigations continue, both Pakistan and India are closely monitoring the situation.
