Bharatiya Janata Party alleges Congress, NewsClick, and China linked to “anti-India umbilical cord”
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress party, news portal NewsClick, and China of being connected through an “anti-India umbilical cord.” Union Minister Anurag Thakur cited a report by The New York Times, claiming that companies linked to China were funding NewsClick.
In the controversy, the NYT’s report mentioned the name of American millionaire Neville Roy Singham, who allegedly funded NewsClick as part of a global network spreading Chinese propaganda in India.
The New York Times report stated, “In New Delhi, corporate filings show, Singham’s network financed a news site, NewsClick, that sprinkled its coverage with Chinese government talking points. ‘China’s history continues to inspire the working classes,’ one video said.”
Who is Neville Roy Singham?
1) Neville Roy Singham was born on May 13, 1954, in the United States. He is the son of leftist academic Archibald Singham, who was a professor of political science at Brooklyn College until his passing in 1991. Archibald Singham was born in Burma to Sri Lankan parents.
2) Singham is the founder and former chairman of ThoughtWorks, a Chicago-based software consultancy. He served at the company for 24 years from 1993 until 2017 when he sold it. Singham holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Howard University and has attended the University of Michigan.
3) In 2016, Singham married activist Jodie Evans, a former Democratic political adviser and co-founder of Code Pink. The NYT alleged that Code Pink, once a critic of China, has shifted its stance due to Singham’s network of funding.
4) Singham currently maintains an office space on the 18th floor of Times Square in Shanghai, China. The NYT claimed that one outlet in his network is co-producing a YouTube show partly financed by the city’s propaganda department.
5) Described as a “socialist benefactor of far-left causes,” the 69-year-old millionaire has been accused of having direct contact with the propaganda arm of the Communist Party of China. Singham’s LinkedIn profile states that he is retired.
