Delhi: Cancer Nano Medicine to Reduce Side Effects and Prevent Recurrence

Expansion

  • Researchers from the School of Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, are developing a new nanomedicine for cancer treatment that directly targets affected areas and reduces side effects.
  • This nanomedicine is being developed in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
  • The new medicine will require the patient to take only one-third of the medicine compared to current cancer treatment drugs.
  • The current cancer treatment drugs work with the blood or cells at the cancer site, which may affect other parts of the body and cause side effects.

According to Dr. Shantikumar Nair, Director of the Center for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine, the new nanomedicine will help reduce the possibility of cancer recurrence in patients after recovery. It will also minimize the side effects of cancer drugs.

The research team is working on developing nanocarriers that can directly target the affected cells and deliver the medicine to the tumor site. The nanocarriers will be made up of biocompatible materials that can be safely used in the human body.

This new development in cancer treatment is expected to revolutionize the way cancer is treated in the future. The nanomedicine will not only reduce the side effects of current cancer drugs but also increase the chances of successful recovery.
