KOLKATA: First-year student Swapnodeep Kundu, 18, died early Thursday after falling from the second-floor balcony of Jadavpur University’s boys’ hostel. The incident occurred just two days after he moved into the hostel at the start of the academic session. The circumstances surrounding his death have raised suspicions of ragging, with his parents and fellow students claiming he was a victim. Swapnodeep was admitted to the Bengali undergraduate course. The university has formed a probe panel to investigate the incident, with the report expected within two weeks. Initial investigations by the police suggest that Swapnodeep “jumped off” the balcony, but there are other factors indicating ragging. Some classmates reported that Swapnodeep had discussed the issue and expressed his desire for it to end. Additionally, a social media post by a fellow fresher alleged that Swapnodeep’s death was a result of ragging by seniors. Swapnodeep’s father revealed that he had spoken to his mother multiple times on Wednesday evening, expressing fear for his life and wanting to return home. Joint CP (crime) Shankha Shubra Chakrabarty stated that the teenager fell from the second floor of the main hostel at 11.45pm on Wednesday and was taken to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The initial postmortem revealed fractures and other injuries to the left side of the head, rib, pelvis, and spine. Students claimed to have informed the dean about Swapnodeep’s abnormal behavior before his death, but their calls went unanswered. Jadavpur University’s pro-VC, Amitava Datta, expressed his condolences and stated that no complaint of ragging had been received so far, but the committee would investigate the matter.
