New Delhi to Build 200-220 Airports, Heliports and Water Aerodromes in the Next 5 Years

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced on Wednesday that India will construct 200 to 220 airports, heliports and water aerodromes in the next five years. The decision was made during the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where Scindia stated that Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Bengaluru have a capacity of around 22 crores. The addition of Navi Mumbai and Jewar Airport will increase this number to 41.5 crores in the next eight years.

The Union Minister further shared that a capex of 1 lakh crore has been fixed in the field of airports, with 25-30 thousand crore being allocated to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the rest to the private sector. AAI will spend on 42 brownfield and three greenfield airports, while the private sector will spend on four brownfield and three greenfield airports.

As of 2021, India has a total of 487 airports and airstrips, out of which AAI manages 137 airports, including 29 international airports, 10 customs airports and 103 domestic airports. With the construction of new airports, India aims to improve its aviation infrastructure and enhance connectivity across the country.

Currently, the United States has the highest number of airports in the world, with 13,513 airports. Brazil comes in second with over 4,000 airports, followed by Mexico with over 1,700 airports.

The construction of new airports in India will boost the country’s economy and provide better transportation options for its citizens. With a focus on both brownfield and greenfield projects, the government aims to ensure sustainable development and growth in the aviation sector.

In related news, Kanpur’s old airport has been closed after 53 years, with flights now operating from the new terminal.
