If you’re planning to buy a new Airtel, Jio, BSNL, or Vodafone-Idea SIM card or considering changing your telecom operator, there’s good news for you. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made significant changes to the SIM card purchasing and operator switching rules, making the entire process completely paperless.
What’s New?
- Introduction of e-KYC and Self-KYC: The DoT has launched e-KYC (Know Your Customer) and Self-KYC facilities for users. Now, you can purchase a new SIM card without any paperwork.
- Easier Operator Switching: To switch your number from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa, you no longer need to visit a telecom operator’s office. This can now be done through an OTP-based verification process from the comfort of your home.
- No Photocopies or Physical Documents Required: You can buy a new SIM card without sharing any photocopies or physical documents, reducing the risk of misuse of personal information.
How Does the New Rule Work?
Aadhaar-Based e-KYC and Self-KYC
- Use of Aadhaar Card: To purchase a new SIM card, you can now use your Aadhaar card. Telecom companies will perform paperless verification using your Aadhaar details.
- Minimal Cost: This process will cost you just ₹1 (including GST).
- Self-KYC Facility: You can verify your KYC online by yourself using DigiLocker. This makes the SIM purchasing process even more straightforward.
Preventing Fraudulent Activities
The DoT’s new rule aims to curb fraudulent activities involving misuse of personal documents. By digitizing the process, it becomes more secure, ensuring that no SIM card can be issued illegally in someone else’s name.
A Step Towards Digital India
This change is a significant move under the Digital India initiative to implement a fully paperless system. It not only saves time and resources but also streamlines the procedures, making them faster and more user-friendly.
What Should Users Do?
- When Buying a New SIM Card: Use your Aadhaar card and follow the telecom company’s instructions to complete the e-KYC or Self-KYC process.
- When Switching Numbers: If you wish to switch from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa, utilize the OTP-based verification method to change your connection without visiting any office.
