ED Raids 25 Places in India Over Online Gaming Companies Involved in Forex Violations
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has raided 25 locations across five states and union territories in India as part of its investigation into foreign exchange violations against several online gaming companies registered abroad and websites operating from India. The ED discovered that companies registered in smaller countries with fake names, which had no connection with online gaming activities, were collecting money and diverting it for services or goods, which were being sent out of India in the name of import. While gambling has been banned in India since the British government introduced the Public Gambling Act in 1867, Satta King or Satta Matka, an online game that is often mistaken for a lottery, is still played indiscriminately despite being illegal.
Satta King or Satta Matka, a type of gambling or lottery game, emerged as a lottery in India in the 1950s and is gaining a lot of popularity in the online platform recently. It is played by more than one person, where players place their bets based on a Matka (pot) number. The bet is based on guessing the number to win the prize. Although betting is illegal in India, there is still a lot of ambiguity on the legality of online Satta Matka. Earlier known as ‘Ankada Jugger’, Satta Matka has been widely popular since the 1950s.
While it is legal to play lotteries in many states of India like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Kerala, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, and Sikkim, very strict rules have been made by the state governments regarding granting licenses for such lotteries, conducting such activities, and levying tax on the prize money received on them. The rise of Satta Matka or Satta King in India and its popularity among the working class of India has made it a major concern for the government.
