Government’s Efforts Against Cyber Fraud
The I4C, which stands for the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, is actively working to combat cyber fraud. In a decisive move, the government has shut down 600,000 mobile phones linked to fraudulent activities. Additionally, following directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Cyber Wing, around 65,000 URLs associated with cyber scams have been blocked. These efforts reflect a strong commitment to tackling the growing issue of cyber crime in the country.
Significant Actions Taken by I4C
In recent months, I4C has blocked approximately 800 applications involved in cyber fraud. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) has reported over 100,000 investment scam complaints in 2023 alone, leading to around 17,000 FIRs being filed. From January to September 2024, there were thousands of complaints ranging from digital arrests to trading and dating scams. To further address these issues, the Cyber Wing has taken substantial actions, including freezing 325,000 fraudulent accounts and closing 3,401 social media accounts and websites used for cyber crimes.
About the I4C Wing
The I4C Wing was established on October 5, 2018, with the aim of creating a national coordination center that tackles cyber crime across India. This center is responsible for monitoring high-priority cases and works closely with control rooms in different states. The platform facilitates cooperation in identifying fake accounts and cards, aids in crime analysis and investigation, and offers technical and legal support. Moreover, it aims to train a workforce of cyber commandos to enhance the nation’s capability in fighting cyber threats effectively.
