Good News for Car Owners and Travelers on National Highways
There’s great news for private car owners and middle-class passengers who travel on national highways. The central government is set to introduce an annual and lifetime toll pass facility soon.
Annual and Lifetime Toll Pass
Passengers will soon be able to purchase an annual toll pass for ₹3,000, which will allow unlimited travel on national highways for an entire year. Additionally, a lifetime toll pass valid for 15 years will be available for ₹30,000. This new scheme is expected to directly benefit millions of travelers on national highways and help reduce congestion at toll plazas.
Final Stages of Implementation
The proposal is currently in the final stages with the Ministry of Road Transport. Alongside this, the ministry is also considering reducing toll rates per kilometer for private cars, aiming to provide even more relief to highway users. Importantly, there’s no need to buy a new card for these passes; they will be integrated into the existing Fastag system.
Current Monthly Pass System
At present, monthly passes are available for crossing a single toll plaza, priced at ₹340 per month. Over a year, this totals ₹4,080. In contrast, the new annual pass costing ₹3,000 for unlimited travel across the entire national highway network offers a more economical option. This initiative will be completely optional and is expected to gain popularity among travelers.
Addressing Toll Plaza Issues
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has indicated that the ministry is actively working on this toll pass plan for private car owners. This initiative is seen as a solution to several issues, including growing dissatisfaction with toll plazas, the establishment of toll gates less than 60 kilometers apart, and instances of violence at toll plazas.
