The Fame India Program, which is a crucial initiative of the Central Government, has completed its first phase and is currently in the final stage of its second phase. The Ministry of Industry recently presented some figures related to the program in the Parliament. In this article, we will provide an overview of the Fame India Program, highlight its achievements in the first phase, and discuss the timeline and goals of the ongoing second phase.

Fame India, which stands for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid Electric Vehicles, is an essential component of the National Electric Mobility Mission. The main focus of the program is to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles by providing government subsidies. The first phase of Fame India commenced in 2015 and concluded on March 31, 2019. The second phase began on April 1, 2019, and is scheduled to run until March 31, 2024, with a budget allocation of Rs 10,000 crore.

The government has set ambitious targets for the second phase of Fame India. It aims to promote the purchase of 10 lakh two-wheeler electric/battery vehicles, 55 thousand passenger cars, five lakh three-wheelers, and over seven thousand e-buses within the five-year duration of the program. Additionally, the central government is actively working on expanding the EV charging network across the country. During the first phase, approval was granted for the construction of 520 charging stations nationwide.

In the second phase of Fame India, 2877 EV charging stations have been approved across 68 cities, along with 1576 charging stations on nine expressways and 16 highways. Some of these charging stations are already operational, while others will become available in the coming days. The government has allocated Rs 800 crore for the establishment of public charging stations.

As of July 21, 2023, a total of 8.33 lakh electric vehicles have been procured under Fame India, out of the targeted 10 lakh vehicles. The government has also provided a provision of Rs 25,938 crore to promote domestic EV vehicle manufacturing in Fame India 2. Furthermore, over Rs 18,000 crore has been allocated for companies involved in the production of Advanced Chemistry Cells (ACC). To support the growth of the EV industry, the government has reduced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on EVs from 12% to 5%, and the GST on EV charging from 18% to 5%. Battery-operated vehicles are also given green number plates, exempting them from permits. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has urged states to consider reducing road tax for EVs.

The Fame India Program has made significant progress in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles in the country. With the ongoing second phase, the government aims to further accelerate the transition towards sustainable and eco-friendly transportation options.
