Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, announced on October 6, 2025, that electric vehicles (EVs) in India will soon match the prices of petrol-powered vehicles. He highlighted that India’s reliance on fossil fuels results in a significant economic burden and environmental concerns.
Gadkari mentioned during the 20th FICCI Higher Education Summit that the price of EVs is expected to be equal to that of petrol vehicles in the next four to six months. He also expressed the ambition to make India the leading vehicle manufacturer globally within five years.
The Indian vehicle industry has grown from Rs 14 lakh crore to Rs 22 lakh crore since Gadkari took office. For context, the US automobile industry is valued at Rs 78 lakh crore, while China’s is at Rs 47 lakh crore. Additionally, farmers in India have earned Rs 45,000 crore through ethanol production from maize.
Gadkari emphasized the importance of higher education and skill development for India’s youth. He believes that with the right education and skills, India can harness its potential and compete effectively on the world stage.
He also urged higher education institutions to focus on practical applications and innovative technology in their curricula to align with future plans and developments in the industry.
