Delhi residents can breathe easy as the mountains of garbage at Ghazipur, Okhla, and Bhalswa landfill sites will be completely gone within a year. The monitoring committee headed by LG VK Saxena has set a target of complete leveling of these landfill sites by May 2024, with work progressing rapidly to eliminate 50% by August 2023, 75% by February 2024, and 100% by May 2024. This is expected to bring great relief to the people of Delhi, with the quality of contaminated groundwater around the landfill sites starting to improve after a year, and pure air becoming available to breathe.

Strict action will be taken by registering a criminal case against the nodal officers of the corporation associated with this project if the mountains of garbage are not eliminated within a year. The LG has made it clear that the deadline given by the MCD to clear the garbage mountain changes from five years. At present, a large number of large-sized trommel machines have been installed to cut the mountains of garbage, with the Union Ministry of Urban Development and the Delhi government also lending their support.

The inert waste clay from landfill sites is being used by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to make roads, for road filling at Mithapur and Dwarka sites, planting trees at several sites, and leveling of deep places.

The corporation has set a target of planting 80 lakh saplings and 2.5 lakh shrubs in Delhi, with the responsibility of increasing the green area along the roads for the G-20 meeting. This winter, 150 parks in every corner of Delhi will be identified and made attractive. The Zero Waste Colony concept of MCD is progressing fast, with more than 100 colonies in Delhi becoming zero waste so far, doing 100% disposal of their own waste. The corporation plans to increase their number this year.

The MCD has also talked to DDA officials to turn the areas where the garbage mountains stand into beautiful green areas, but this plan is still in the future.
