Delhi University’s School of Open Learning (SOL) has cancelled the degree fair that was organized to distribute bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The administration took this decision in view of the possibility of a stampede when the students reached the fair. Now, the degrees will be sent to the students through speed post. The degree fair was scheduled to be organized on Sunday as well.
10,000 students were registered to receive their degrees on the first day of the degree fair. However, after two hours, the degree distribution had to be stopped due to the huge crowd of students. Approximately 30,000 students reached the hall with a capacity of 10,000, and long queues formed outside the auditorium. In such a situation, the students started jumping over the wall to go inside. Due to the huge crowd, there was a traffic jam in the campus as well.
Acting Principal of SOL, Dr. US Pandey said that the degree fair had to be cancelled because it could have been difficult to handle such a crowd, and a stampede could have resulted in a major accident. Now, the degrees will not be given even on June 4, and speed post will be used to distribute the degrees.
Student organization Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) alleges that massive mismanagement by SOL led to the stampede during the event. Students were not allowed to go to the venue arbitrarily, and the program was cancelled suddenly, affecting the students who had come from far and wide to get their degrees. KYS blamed the SOL administration for the chaos and stampede caused by the cancellation of the fair, and demanded the immediate sacking of Payal Mago, the SOL Director.
In conclusion, the cancellation of the degree fair at SOL has caused inconvenience to the students who had been waiting to receive their degrees. The decision to send the degrees through speed post has been taken to avoid any further chaos and stampede situations.
