Residents and commuters between Delhi and Gurugram have a reason to rejoice as travel between these two cities is set to become hassle-free.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has completed the construction of the link road connecting Delhi and Gurugram, part of the Dwarka Expressway project.

This development is a precursor to the much-anticipated inauguration of the Dwarka Expressway, which promises to facilitate a smoother journey between Delhi and Gurugram, bypassing traffic jams and red lights.

Preparing for the Launch

Initially, two sections of the Dwarka Expressway are being prepared for opening. These include Package 2, connecting Dwarka Sector 21 in Delhi to the Gurugram border, and Package 3, extending from the Delhi-Gurugram border to the Basai Railway Overbridge.

The connection of these packages is crucial for the operationalization of the highway, allowing travelers from Gurugram to reach Dwarka Sector 21 via an underpass.

Anticipated Inauguration

The Dwarka Expressway is expected to open to the public soon, with sources hinting at an inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The opening is likely to be scheduled before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, although a specific date has not been set.

Gurugram’s MP, Rao Inderjit Singh, mentioned that the Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the expressway in the first week of March.

Five Key Aspects of the Dwarka Expressway

  • India’s First Urban Elevated Expressway: Part of the Bharatmala Project, the Dwarka Expressway is set to reduce travel time between Delhi and Gurugram to just 20-25 minutes./
  • Four-Part Construction: The expressway is divided into four packages, two each in Delhi and Haryana, enhancing connectivity across the region.

  • Length and Design: Spanning 29.6 kilometers, it is the country’s first expressway supported by single pillars, with 18.9 kilometers in Haryana and 10.1 kilometers in Delhi.
  • Project Cost: Valued at approximately ₹9,000 crores, the project is nearing completion, with the final two packages expected to be finished by the end of this month and the first two by the end of June.

  • Expressway Network Levels: Featuring a multi-tiered network including tunnels, underpasses, grade roads, elevated roads, and flyovers above flyovers, it includes Delhi’s widest 8-lane tunnel stretching 3.6 kilometers, significantly improving connectivity to IGI Airport from Haryana.

Impact and Benefits

The Dwarka Expressway is poised to significantly ease the daily commute for thousands, providing a swift and efficient route between Delhi and Gurugram. This infrastructural marvel will not only reduce travel time but also alleviate congestion on traditional routes, offering a seamless travel experience.

With its upcoming inauguration, the expressway is expected to become a vital link in the NCR’s transportation network, enhancing economic activity and providing a boost to the regional connectivity.
