New Delhi High Court Advocates for Gender Equality in Armed Forces
New Delhi, Delhi High Court has advocated for gender equality in the armed forces. On Tuesday, the court said that when a woman officer can be posted on the border in Siachen, a man can also be appointed as a nurse in the army.
A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Narula is hearing a petition regarding the alleged unconstitutional practice of keeping only female nurses in military establishments. Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, representing the Centre, said the practices in the Army are based on long-standing traditions. However, the bench said that the government has just brought a law to give 33 percent reservation to women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The bench said that the Supreme Court has repeatedly held that there should be no gender bias. The court has listed the petition for further hearing in November.
