Recently, at a significant event held at the Taj Hotel, Ratan Tata unveiled a groundbreaking development in the automotive sector – the retrofitted Nano Electric. This vehicle is an electric version of the popular Tata Nano, converted by Electra EV, a startup specializing in electric vehicle technologies. This event marks a significant stride in the sustainable mobility sector, and many are hopeful that this heralds the future introduction of the Tata Nano in its electric form.

Electra EV: Powering the Change

Electra EV, the company behind this transformation, is proficient in powertrains, battery packs, retrofitting Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) cars, and providing related services. Ratan Tata himself launched this startup, which has garnered attention for its innovative approach in the EV sector.

Key Features of the Tata Nano EV

The electric Nano features a 624 cc engine based entirely on the original petrol engine, now equipped with a 72V powertrain and a super polymer lithium-ion battery. This setup promises a range of about 160 kilometers on a full charge and can accelerate from 0 to 60 km/h in just 10 seconds. Interestingly, the startup has made no significant changes other than the powertrain upgrade.

Certifications and Focus

The electric version of the Tata Nano has received certification from ARAI and RTO. The company is currently focusing on retrofitting services for the focus segment. It’s noteworthy that Electra EV’s powertrain was used in 25% of all four-wheeled electric vehicles sold in the fiscal year 2022.
