DGCA Suspends Air India’s Chief of Flight Safety for Lapses in Accident Prevention Work
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has suspended Air India’s chief of flight safety for a month after finding lapses in accident prevention work carried out by the airline. This action comes after the aviation watchdog conducted a surveillance of Air India on July 25 and 26, focusing on internal audit, accident prevention work, and availability of technical manpower.
The DGCA stated that deficiencies were found in the accident prevention work carried out by the airline and the availability of necessary technical manpower. It also discovered that some of the internal audit and spot checks claimed by the airline were not conducted in accordance with regulatory requirements. Show cause notices have been issued to the concerned post holders after reviewing the action taken report submitted by the airline.
The DGCA has instructed Air India not to assign any audits, surveillance, or spot checks related to DGCA compliance to the particular auditor whose inspections indicate a lack of diligence.
This is not the first time Air India has faced scrutiny from the aviation regulator. Recently, the DGCA suspended simulator training activities for A320 pilots at the airline’s facility in Hyderabad due to lapses observed during an inspection.
A senior Air India official stated that the airline is taking corrective measures based on the regulator’s observations. Air India has Boeing simulator training facilities in Hyderabad and Mumbai, catering to pilots of both wide-body and narrow-body fleets.
