Delhi has set a new record in terms of alcohol consumption, with a staggering sale of over 61 crore liquor bottles within the last year. This record-breaking sale has significantly contributed to the Delhi government’s treasury, generating a revenue increase of more than Rs 7,285 crore.

According to a Delhi government official, under the old excise policy implemented between September 1, 2022, and August 31, 2023, the government earned a substantial amount from liquor sales. Out of the total revenue, Rs 2,013.44 crore was earned from Value Added Tax (VAT). In the previous financial year 2021-22, the government had earned Rs 5,487.58 crore from liquor sales under the new excise policy.

Allegations on Delhi Government:

The new excise policy of the Delhi government has faced significant criticism, leading to numerous allegations against the government. Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, VK Saxena, had recommended a CBI inquiry, alleging the government’s disregard for several rules. As a result of the investigation, the CBI arrested the then Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, on charges of irregularities. The new excise policy, introduced on November 17, 2021, was subsequently withdrawn on August 31, 2022, due to the controversies surrounding it. Currently, liquor sales in Delhi are being conducted under the old system and rules.
