New Delhi: The construction of the ground floor of the three-storey Ram Temple in Ayodhya is set to be completed by December-end, according to Nripendra Mishra, the Chairperson of the temple Construction Committee. The consecration ceremony is expected to take place on January 22, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to participate in an event related to the ‘pran pratishtha’ between January 20-24.
Work is currently underway to design an apparatus that will be installed on the ‘shikhar’ of the temple. This apparatus will make sun rays fall momentarily on the forehead of the deity in the sanctum sanctorum on the day of Ram Navami every year. The design is being overseen by scientists in Bengaluru, and a computerized program has been created by the Central Building Research Institute in Roorkee and an institute in Pune.
The construction of the Ram Temple was made possible by a 2019 verdict from the Supreme Court, which allowed for the construction of the temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. The court ruled that the 2.77 acres of the disputed land where the Babri Masjid once stood would be handed over to the trust within three months of the ruling for the construction of the temple.
The Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust will formally invite PM Modi for the consecration ceremony, which will take place after Makar Sankranti on January 14. The ceremony will be preceded by a 10-day ritual of Ram Lalla’s ‘pran pratishtha’.
The Ram temple is expected to open for devotees on January 24, following the consecration of the Ram Lalla idol. When asked about the political implications of the ceremony taking place ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Mishra did not reject the suggestion but emphasized that the construction of the temple will be completed within the stipulated time.
The temple is being constructed with a vision to last at least 1,000 years, and the ‘pran pratishtha’ will be carried out in consultation with knowledgeable saints and sages. The temple’s construction committee has urged people to witness the ceremony from their homes and villages via television broadcast.
After the consecration ceremony, devotees will have a brief time for a ‘darshan’ of the idol. The temple’s architecture does not include the use of iron, and copper has been used to link the stone blocks. The temple complex covers an area of 2.5 acres, including the ‘parikrama path’, and will feature ninety bronze panels depicting the life and duties of Lord Ram.
Approximately Rs 900 crore has been spent on the temple’s construction so far, and it is estimated that another Rs 1,700 crore to 1,800 crore will be spent on the overall construction of the complex. Artefacts discovered during excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India and during the temple’s construction work will be displayed in a proposed museum after receiving permission from the ASI.
The consecration ceremony will be attended by a preliminary list of 10,000 people, including saints, seers, and individuals associated with the Ram temple movement.
